Jesus’ Advice for the Times We Live

by Foothills Church on March 21, 2021

Read again the passage from Pastor Dave’s sermon: Luke 6:46-49, the parable of the wise and foolish men who built their homes on different foundations.

Have you ever experienced a serious disaster with your home- fire, flood, something like that? Share with the group what went through your mind when you saw the destruction. Was it easy or was it hard to pick up the pieces and move on?

Do you think Jesus spoke this parable because he had a burning passion to improve housing conditions among the poor of Palestine? Maybe He was trying to initiate an early “Habitat for Humanity” effort? If not, what do you think was going through his mind as he looked around at his audience and spoke this parable?

Consider: both the wise and the foolish man enjoyed nice “houses”. There was no obvious difference between them…until the “floods” came. Then everything changed. What do you suppose Jesus means by “rains, winds, and floods”?

In the parable, both the wise and the foolish man are attentive to Jesus’ words. I’m sure they both nodded approvingly as He taught. What was the one, massive difference between these two men; the difference that resulted in catastrophe for one, and stability for the other?
